When you need training
If you have a licence issued before January 1997 you should have acquired or grandfather rights to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to a maximum weight of 8.25 tonnes MAM (maximum authorised mass)
For all car licences issued after January 1997, these will be subject to various restrictions dependant on the dates obtained.
The rules say that a trailer of more than 750kgs can be towed providing the trailers’ maximum weight does not exceed the ULW of the towing vehicle and that the total combined vehicle and trailer doesn’t exceed 3.5 tonnes.
If your combination goes over 3.5 tonnes the driver will need Category B+E as a minimum.
As a rule you will need to take the B+E test to enable you to have the restriction removed and allow towing of any trailer

Towing Test Information
Towing Tests are conducted by the DVSA Driving & Vehicle Standards Agency, the same as when you took your car driving licence.
Driver Training Centre is located right next door to the DVSA test centre in Ivyhouse Lane, Hastings so you couldn’t be better situation from training to test!
We have a fully equipped, purpose built training centre with off road manoeuvring facilities together with fully air conditioned classrooms should you require in house theory element training.
Training is generally 1:1 using customers own vehicles, this maintains continuity with your own equipment and not having to get used to another type of vehicle wasting unnecessary time and practice.
